ACENZ InnovateNZ 2012 - Silver Award of Excellence

In conjunction with Aurecon and Holcim New Zealand, Liddell Contracting won the Silver Award of Excellence for the Spent Cell Liner Handling and Disposal Plant at Cape Foulwind Westport.

Spent Cell Lining (SCL) is a waste product from the smelting of aluminium which is considered to be a hazardous waste in many countries because it contains significant quantities of absorbed flourides and traces of cyanide. Current opportunites for proessing this material are limited, and for New Zealand, Australia along with many other contries the primary scl plant installationoption has been to ship the material offshore to specialist destruction facilities.

The plant designed by Aurecon and built and commissioned by Liddell Contracting for the Cape Foulwind cement plant is owned by Holcim New Zealand. They accept crushed and sized but otherwise unprocessed SCL and captures the inherent energy through co-firing it into a cement kiln through a standard scoop feeding system approximately halfway down the kiln. As the material is hazardous and generates hydrogen and heat when wet, the plant required special hazard design and significant attention to safety. The final design was a fully sealed automated handling and storage system with built in safety and hydrogen drainage systems.

The design overcomes issues limiting operational viability in previous attempts to dispose of SCL at offshore plants and now sets a benchmark as a process for safe disposal of SCL worldwide.

EEO Trust 2010 Work & Life Awards - Winner Skills Highway Award

EEO Trust Work Life Award 2010

The EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) Work Life Awards celebrate organisations that actively invest in their businesses by investing in their workforce, whatever the economic weather. More than 40 entries were received for this year.

This award category celebrates employers who invest in their staff to ensure their full potential is tapped.

To address literacy, language and numeracy problems Liddell Contracting and their training partner Karoro Business Training developed "Building Bridges", a programme that offered one to two hours of tutoring to individual staff using real workplace documentation to get on top of literacy and numeracy issues.

Liddell's recruit the best skilled staff and sometimes this means recruiting from all over the world. As some of our staff speak English as a second language, their learning needs were addressed separately with one-on-one tutoring across a range of workplace activities such as emailing, phone conversations and speaking with clients. Paperwork errors decreased dramatically.

Liddell Contracting now provides literacy and numeracy training for all of their apprentices where necessary.
